Yogananda leaves

Returning to the United States, he continued to lecture, write and found centers in Southern California. In the days before his death, he knew that his time to leave this world had come. On March 7, 1952, he attended a dinner for India’s ambassador to the United States, Binay Ranjan Sen and his wife at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. At the end of the meal, Yogananda spoke of India and the United States, of their contributions to world peace and human progress, and of their collaboration in the future, expressing his hope for a united world that would combine the best qualities of the “efficient United States” (efficient America) and “spiritual India.

Yogananda published his life story in 1946 under the title Autobiography of a Yogi, which is appreciated in its genre as a life story and has been translated into 25 languages. In 1999, the publisher Harper Collins (which published it) declared it one of the “100 most important books of the 20th century”.

It also gives an account of his encounter with some outstanding people of his time, both in the field of religion (such as Sri Ramana Maharshi), politics (Mahatma Gandhi, who became his disciple), literature (Rabindranath Tagore) and science (the Bengali Jagdish Chandra Bose).

The father could not forgive himself. And meditating helped him. Meditating he felt the presence of his son, who said: “Father, everything is all right”. He felt that there is no barrier between life and death, that we can all remain connected. And then an infinite peace filled him.
